Nikon D70 / D70s Commander mode setup



The Nikon D70 / D70s can be used as a master/commander flash unit. The D70 is however limited to 1 group of flashes. And it will only work in channel 3 and group A.

Press menu and navigate to the custom setting menu with the pen icon on it, then go to setting # 19. To confirm selection You can press enter, or right on the multi selector.

Use the multi selector and navigate to Commander mode, confirm selection.

On this screen you have three choices, TTL(through the lens) AA(auto) or M (manual) mode. Pick the setting you want, and confirm selection with either Enter or by pressing Right on the multi selector.

If you followed the steps above you should now see a C next to the flash icon in custom setting #19. This tells you that the camera is now in commander mode. The C icon will be there no matter what mode you selected in step 3. In commander mode the onboard flash will not contribute to the overall lighting. It can be seen slightly in close up shots tough.

As noted in the beginning the D70 is limited to 1 group of flashes. And it will only work in channel 3 and group A. This means that you have to set up the remote flashes to Channel 3 and group A.
